Why is there a plastic piece in the bottom of my Guinness draught bottles?
Question by Esmerelda: Why is there a plastic piece in the bottom of my Guinness draught bottles?
I’ve become a fan of Guinness at one of my favorite eating spots and bought a six pack of Guinness Draught to drink at home. There is plastic in the bottom of the bottle and I was wondering what its for.

my guinness loving father tells me it puts the ‘zzzzz’ in it, i gather that to mean the fizz. it only activates when the can/bottle is opened.
isnt it pretty to watch!

it’s called a nitro widget.
A widget is a device placed in a container of beer to manage the characteristics of the beer’s head.

On tap, Guinness Draught is injected with a surge of nitrogen before serving, which gives the beer its creamy head and smooth texture. Unlike carbonated liquids, nitrogenated liquids cannot merely be canned or bottled without quickly going flat or spoiling, so Guinness patented a “widget” process to inject the gas into its retail versions of Draught upon opening.
Keep in mind, though, that canned and bottled Guinness are not one and the same. Canned Guinness’ widget is an orb at the bottom of the can that provides the nitrogen surge immediately throughout the entire can. Bottled Guinness uses a widget somewhat spear-like in shape near the top of the bottle which only releases gas when it comes in contact with the liquid. The widget in bottled Guinness is designed for multiple contacts with small volumes of the stout, i.e. drinking straight from the bottle. Its performance during continuous exposure to liquids is less than optimal, and as a result many believe it to be inferior to the canned version: the latter is believed to provide a more authentic recreation of Guinness’ signature pour.

The widget is designed to give the beer its creamy head. The beer in the widget is pressurized like the rest of the can or bottle and, when opened, it sprays the beer into the can like a water gun. This stirs everything up a little.
